History:
Steve was born in the wild, on a bitterly cold October Friday night. Anna was severely weakened by the births of Steve and Kelly and died when her two cubs were about six months old. Steve was three years old when his father chose Sandra, an accomplished hunter within the pack and a doctor outside it. He attended Winterley School System for his whole educational history. When he graduated high school, Steve wanted to join the Marines, but Eric invoked his authority as Alpha, forcing Steve to stay close to home for fear that the invasive medical examinations of the US military would reveal their nature.
Steve went to school at Western Carolina, choosing to pursue law enforcement. He graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and applied with the county sheriff's office. After several years on the force, the sheriff learned his secret when two children playing in the woods got thoroughly lost and even the department's own K-9 and the dog's handler were unable to track them. Steve stashed his uniform in the patrol car and turned to his wolf to track down the two missing children, the same way he had many times to find stupid hikers lost in the woods near the lake. He was spotted on four legs by the sheriff after herding the two children back to the search party. The sheriff, gun drawn, followed the huge black wolf and watched Steve change back to a human. This led to a long conversation back at the sheriff's office.
Steve and his father have been less than good terms for going on twenty years, starting from when Steve tried to leave Winterley to join the military and Eric vetoed it, threatening his son with never being able to return to their territory. Really, it goes back farther, and father and son have clashed off and on for decades. Among the people who tell old tall tales of the Packfolk, it is said that howls can be heard at night by the lake as the wolves sing along with the lake song.
Currently Steve, since then, acts as unofficial "search and rescue" with the department and primarily has patrol duties in Winterley.

Role Play Sample:
Steve was socializing at the Sailor House, mostly acting to keep drunks in line when the group of city visitors came in. And mentioned two of their party hadn't come back after hiking the North Loop of the lake. With night coming, the search was started.
The woods were quiet around the lake, as Steve stalked, following the scent. A pair of yuppies on vacation from DC had disappeared while hiking. He'd first heard about it down at The Sailor House, when the two had failed to meet up with their party and the sheriff had launched a search as night fell.
Now deep in the woods, Steve was tracking the strong scent, broken branches and disturbed earth. Walking behind him, the sheriff shone his flashlight around, while taking care to keep the beam from blinding Steve. "Got anything yet?"
It was just the tail tip that twitched as Steve turned his head to look back and barked once. He had the scent, the hikers had been through abut half an hour ago. He took off after the scent, following the trail where the missing hikers had left the official park routes and wandered into the woods. Across a fairly narrow stream that flowed toward the lake and a big pile of deadfall wood, he found them. One obviously had a broken leg, the other was pacing around with a cell phone getting no service. At least the dumb city guys had been smart to stay in one place. They hadn't seen him and Steve waited as the sheriff followed his trail and called out. "Matt Jensen?"
The guy with the cell phone looked at. "Oh thank god! I was getting no cell phone service and the GPS's batteries ran out."
Neither of them noticed as while handing out extra coats to add to what they were wearing, the sheriff dropped a bundle of clothes on the ground. Steve grabbed it all in his teeth and took off into the brush to change his form and dress, ready to give the flimsy story about how good a tracker he was for how they'd been found.
